US Missile Strike Hits Wedding Celebration in Iran: 5 Dead, 50 Injured
NEWS DESK KOLKATA
A wedding celebration turned into a deadly nightmare in southern Iran.
At least five people, including a child, have reportedly been killed, and more than 50 others injured, after shrapnel from a US missile strike hit a home where a wedding celebration was taking place in Sirik, in Iran’s Hormozgan province.
According to the Iranian Red Crescent, people were celebrating when the attack struck the area. Several victims were reportedly trapped beneath the rubble.
But Washington has strongly denied deliberately targeting civilians.
The US Central Command, or CENTCOM, says it was aware of reports from Iran, but insists that the US military does not target civilians.
Washington says its latest strikes were directed at Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, or IRGC, following what it described as recent Iranian attacks and attempted attacks against commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz, as well as US forces in the region.
Iran has now promised retaliation.
Iranian state media says Tehran launched ballistic missiles and drones against US-linked targets in Jordan, Kuwait, Iraq and Bahrain.
In Jordan, the military says it intercepted 13 Iranian ballistic missiles. Ten were destroyed, while three landed in remote areas. No casualties were reported.
Kuwait also activated its air defences following reported Iranian missile attacks, while explosions were reported in Bahrain.
The latest escalation follows the collapse of a temporary ceasefire and comes amid growing tensions around the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz.
With civilian casualties mounting and both sides promising retaliation, fears are growing that the Iran-US confrontation could spiral into a much wider regional war.
