- A pinch of salt
For the Filling:
- 1 cup grated coconut
- ¾ cup jaggery
- ½ teaspoon cardamom powder
- Cashews and raisins, as desired
Method
- Heat a pan and add the grated coconut and jaggery. Cook on medium heat until the jaggery melts and the mixture becomes slightly dry.

- In another pan, bring 1 cup of water to a boil. Add a pinch of salt and 1 teaspoon of ghee.
- Reduce the heat and gradually add the rice flour while stirring continuously to avoid lumps.
- Cover and cook for 3–4 minutes. Allow the mixture to cool slightly.
- Knead the mixture into a soft, smooth dough. Add a little warm water if necessary.
- Divide the dough into small portions and flatten each portion into a thin circle.
- Place a spoonful of the coconut-jaggery filling in the center.
- Carefully fold the edges upward and shape the dough into a traditional modak.
- Place the modaks in a steamer and steam for about 10–12 minutes.
- Once cooked, remove them carefully and serve warm with a little ghee.
