In Hindu mythology, Surya Dev is revered as the embodiment of the Sun and one of the most powerful celestial deities. He represents light, energy, truth and the force that sustains life on Earth. Ancient scriptures describe his daily journey across the sky as a divine mission, bringing daylight to the world and maintaining the rhythm of time.

According to mythology, Surya Dev travels across the heavens in a magnificent chariot drawn by seven horses, symbolising the seven colours of sunlight and, in some traditions, the seven days of the week. His chariot is driven by Aruna, who is described as the divine charioteer.

One of the best-known stories associated with Surya Dev is his connection with Kunti in the Mahabharata. Before her marriage, Kunti possessed a divine mantra that could invoke a celestial deity. Out of curiosity, she invoked Surya. The Sun God appeared before her and, according to the epic tradition, blessed her with a son, Karna. Born with divine armour and earrings, Karna later became one of the most remarkable warriors of the Mahabharata.

Another important episode concerns Hanuman. As a young child, Hanuman is said to have mistaken the rising Sun for a fruit and leapt toward it. Later, Surya Dev became his teacher. Hanuman is believed to have learned various forms of knowledge from the Sun God, highlighting Surya’s role not only as a source of physical light but also as a symbol of wisdom.

Surya worship remains significant in Indian tradition. Devotees offer water to the rising Sun, particularly during morning prayers, expressing gratitude for life, health and energy.

Beyond mythology, the enduring image of Surya Dev carries a timeless message: light represents knowledge, discipline and hope. His daily rise and setting have, for generations, been seen as a reminder that every ending is followed by a new beginning.
