Operation Safed Sagar: Bringing an Untold Chapter of the Kargil War to the Screen
NEW DELHI | AUGUST 30, 2026
Nearly three decades after the Kargil War, Operation Safed Sagar brings renewed attention to one of the most challenging chapters in India’s military history — the Indian Air Force’s crucial role in the 1999 conflict.
Set against the high-altitude terrain of Kargil, the war drama follows pilots undertaking demanding missions in some of the most difficult flying conditions imaginable. The story focuses not only on combat, but also on discipline, preparation, uncertainty and personal courage.
The real Operation Safed Sagar began on May 26, 1999. Air operations were conducted at extreme elevations, with aircraft operating in mountainous terrain where thin air, difficult visibility and complex geography presented enormous challenges. The Air Force was tasked with supporting ground forces while operating under strict operational limitations.
The series places particular emphasis on the people behind the mission. Siddharth portrays Squadron Leader Ajay Ahuja, while Jimmy Shergill plays Wing Commander P. S. Dhanoa. The cast also includes Abhay Verma, Dia Mirza and Prajakta Koli. The series is directed by Oni Sen.
What distinguishes Operation Safed Sagar is its attempt to present military action through human experiences rather than relying solely on spectacle. The narrative explores leadership, camaraderie, responsibility and the difficult decisions faced by personnel during wartime.
The aerial sequences and cockpit-focused storytelling add a strong technical dimension, while the broader narrative seeks to preserve the historical significance of the campaign.
NGTV NEWS EDITORIAL RATING: ★★★★☆ 4/5
Overall, Operation Safed Sagar makes a strong impression as a patriotic war drama that combines historical significance with human emotion. Its strongest elements are its military setting, character-driven storytelling and focus on the challenges faced by personnel during the Kargil conflict.
For audiences, Operation Safed Sagar is more than a war drama. It serves as a cinematic reminder of an often less-discussed dimension of the Kargil conflict and the people who operated behind the headlines.
NGTV NEWS VERDICT: A compelling and emotionally grounded war drama, particularly suited to viewers interested in military history and stories of courage, duty and sacrifice.
