ONE GURKHA. ONE KHUKURI. ONE EXTRAORDINARY ACT OF COURAGE.
WEST BENGAL
An extraordinary story of courage involving former Indian Army soldier Bishnu Shrestha continues to be remembered as a remarkable example of bravery and selfless service.
Shrestha, a former soldier of the 8th Gorkha Rifles, was travelling aboard the Maurya Express through West Bengal while returning to Nepal after completing his military service.
According to accounts of the incident, a group of armed robbers reportedly boarded the train near Chittaranjan and began threatening and looting passengers.
Shrestha initially surrendered his belongings, apparently hoping the situation would end without further confrontation. But when the attackers allegedly targeted an 18-year-old girl, the former soldier decided to intervene.

Armed with his traditional Gurkha khukuri, Shrestha confronted the attackers despite being heavily outnumbered. Reports say he fought several members of the gang and sustained serious injuries before the robbers eventually fled.
His intervention helped protect passengers and prevented the situation from escalating further.
Shrestha later received medical treatment for his injuries and was recognised for his courage, including the Sena Medal and the Uttam Jeevan Raksha Padak.
Perhaps the most striking part of the story came afterward. When the rescued girl’s family reportedly offered him a financial reward, Shrestha declined, saying that helping someone in danger was his duty—not an act performed for money.
