Nepal Flash Floods: 105 Indians Among Hundreds Missing as India Rushes Relief Aid
NEW DELHI, AUGUST 27, 2026: A devastating flash flood in Nepal’s Himalayan border region has triggered a major rescue and relief operation, with 105 Indian nationals among hundreds reported missing after floodwaters swept through parts of Rasuwa district near the Nepal–Tibet border.
The disaster struck along the Bhote Koshi river and caused widespread destruction, washing away roads, bridges, vehicles and homes and damaging several hydropower projects. Officials have continued to revise casualty and missing-person figures as rescue teams reach affected areas, underlining the scale of the catastrophe.
According to the Nepal Tourism Board, 384 travellers were initially reported missing, including 291 foreign nationals and 93 Nepali citizens. Among the foreign nationals were 105 Indians and 37 non-resident Indians. Several of the missing Indians were travelling towards Tibet for the Kailash Manasarovar Yatra.
The sudden surge of water caused severe disruption across settlements in Rasuwa, Dhading and Nuwakot. Nepalese security forces have deployed helicopters and emergency teams to search for survivors and evacuate people from vulnerable areas. Authorities have also warned residents near riverbanks to remain alert amid continuing concerns over further flooding.
India Steps In With Humanitarian Assistance
India has moved swiftly to support Nepal’s emergency response. Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke with Nepalese Prime Minister Balendra Shah and assured him of all possible humanitarian assistance, while Indian authorities coordinated with Nepal on rescue efforts.
India has also dispatched 10 tonnes of humanitarian assistance and essential medicines to Nepal aboard an Indian Air Force C-130J aircraft. Additional relief supplies are expected to follow, while further Indian military transport support remains available if required.
As rescue operations continue, the focus remains on locating those still missing, assisting stranded travellers and delivering emergency supplies to communities cut off by the floods. The disaster has once again highlighted the vulnerability of the Himalayan region to sudden and extreme natural events.
