Kolkata is once again under the threat of rain and thunderstorms. According to the latest weather forecast, the city may experience light to moderate rain along with thunderstorms and gusty winds in some areas on Friday, September 11, 2026. Although widespread heavy rain is not expected across Kolkata, cloudy skies and intermittent showers may continue throughout the day.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned that thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds of around 30–40 kmph are very likely at one or two places in Kolkata and several neighbouring districts. Residents have therefore been advised to remain cautious, particularly during periods of lightning and strong winds.
According to the latest forecast, Kolkata is likely to record a maximum temperature of around 32°C, while the minimum temperature may remain close to 26°C. The sky is expected to remain predominantly cloudy, with a possibility of moderate rainfall. Humidity may remain high, making the weather feel warmer than the actual temperature.
The combination of high humidity, cloudy conditions and rain may keep the atmosphere uncomfortable during the daytime. Although temperatures may not rise sharply, the high moisture content in the air could make the weather feel considerably warmer.
The weather system over the Bay of Bengal is also playing an important role in the current situation. A new low-pressure area has developed over the Bay of Bengal, while the monsoon trough remains active. As a result, several parts of southern West Bengal are expected to receive rainfall over the next few days.
The IMD has forecast comparatively heavier rainfall in districts including East Midnapore, West Midnapore, Jhargram and Bankura. Some areas in these districts may receive heavy rainfall of around 7–11 cm, accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds. Birbhum may also experience periods of heavy rain.
In Kolkata and its neighbouring districts, however, the rainfall is expected to be more scattered. Howrah, Hooghly, North 24 Parganas and South 24 Parganas may also witness thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds of 30–40 kmph at isolated locations.
For Kolkata, the possibility of rain remains throughout the day, although a prolonged spell of extremely heavy rainfall is considered less likely. Residents may therefore experience a typical monsoon pattern, with cloudy skies followed by intermittent showers.
The weather conditions could also affect daily commuting. Sudden showers may lead to waterlogging in low-lying areas, while strong winds could temporarily disrupt traffic and outdoor activities. Office-goers, students and people travelling across the city are advised to keep rain protection handy and remain alert during thunderstorms.
The coastal areas of West Bengal are facing a separate weather warning. Fishermen have been advised to exercise caution as winds over the West Bengal, Odisha and Bangladesh coasts and the northern Bay of Bengal may reach 35–45 kmph, with gusts potentially touching 55 kmph. Local cautionary signals have also been issued at Hooghly Port, covering Kolkata and Haldia, as well as at Sagar Island Port.
Meanwhile, North Bengal is also expected to receive light to moderate rainfall in several areas, with isolated locations possibly recording heavier showers. The overall weather pattern suggests that the monsoon remains active across the state.
For Kolkata residents, the main concern on Friday will therefore be sudden thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds rather than continuous torrential rain. People should avoid standing under trees or near temporary structures during thunderstorms and should preferably remain indoors when lightning activity becomes intense.
With the monsoon system remaining active over the Bay of Bengal, weather conditions may continue to fluctuate over the coming days. Rainfall may provide temporary relief from the heat, but high humidity is likely to keep the weather uncomfortable.
So, if you are stepping out of home today, carrying an umbrella or raincoat would be a sensible precaution. It would also be advisable to check local weather updates before making plans, particularly if travelling during the afternoon or evening when thunderstorms may develop.
