Kolkata Braces for a Wet Saturday as Thunderstorms and Heavy Rain Threaten South Bengal
KOLKATA | AUGUST 29, 2026

NEWS DESK: Kolkata is set for another distinctly monsoon-like Saturday, with thick cloud cover, intermittent rain and thunderstorms expected to shape the weather through the day. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast heavy rainfall along with thunderstorms, lightning and squally winds for Gangetic West Bengal today.

For Kolkata, the forecast points to generally cloudy skies with a few spells of rain or thundershowers. Temperatures are expected to remain relatively moderate for late August, with the city seeing a minimum around 26°C and the maximum around 32–33°C.

The bigger concern is the possibility of sudden thunderstorms and intense spells of rain, which could temporarily affect road traffic and visibility. The IMD has also flagged the possibility of gusty winds accompanying thunderstorms.

Across Gangetic West Bengal, the weather system is likely to remain active beyond Saturday, with heavy rain and thunderstorm warnings extending into August 30 and 31.
