HOMEMADE FRAGRANCE CANDLES: A LOW-INVESTMENT BUSINESS WITH ROOM TO GROW

KOLKATA | SEPTEMBER 1, 2026

Homemade fragrance candles can be started from home with relatively modest capital and expanded gradually through pre-orders, gifting and local sales. A practical beginner setup can start at around ₹20,000–₹30,000, depending on equipment, packaging and the number of candles produced.

STEP 1 — PLAN THE PRODUCT

Start with 3–5 fragrances such as vanilla, lavender, rose, coffee or citrus. Begin with one or two container sizes instead of investing in a large inventory.

STEP 2 — PURCHASE RAW MATERIALS

A starter budget of approximately ₹25,000 can be divided as follows:

  • Wax: ₹5,000
  • Candle-safe fragrance oils: ₹3,000
  • Wicks: ₹1,500
  • Candle-safe jars: ₹5,000
  • Labels and packaging: ₹3,000
  • Basic equipment: ₹3,000
  • Photography/marketing: ₹1,500
  • Contingency: ₹3,000

Purchase small quantities initially and compare suppliers for quality, consistency and delivery costs. Use fragrance oils specifically intended for candle-making and follow the manufacturer’s recommended usage rate.

STEP 3 — PRODUCE AND TEST

Make small batches under appropriate adult supervision. Follow the wax supplier’s instructions for melting and fragrance addition. Test every new wax, wick, fragrance and container combination before selling it. Do not assume that a decorative jar is automatically suitable for candle use.

STEP 4 — CALCULATE YOUR COST

For example, if one candle costs ₹100 to produce—including wax, fragrance, wick, jar, label and packaging—and you sell it for ₹199, the gross profit is:

₹199 − ₹100 = ₹99 per candle

Selling 100 candles would therefore generate ₹9,900 gross profit, before business overheads, discounts, delivery expenses, returns and taxes.

STEP 5 — BUILD THE BRAND

Choose a memorable brand name, create a simple logo and use consistent labels and packaging. Good product photographs and short videos showing the finished candles can make a significant difference online.

STEP 6 — FIND CUSTOMERS

Start with friends, family networks, neighbourhood groups and local gifting communities. Approach cafés, boutiques, event organisers and gift shops with samples and wholesale pricing. Online, use appropriate social-media platforms and WhatsApp Business to display your catalogue and accept enquiries.

STEP 7 — GROW THROUGH OCCASIONS

Create special collections for birthdays, festivals, weddings and corporate gifting. Pre-orders can reduce unsold inventory and improve cash flow.

A ₹25,000 starting investment does not guarantee profit. The strongest route is small-batch production, careful testing, accurate costing and gradual customer acquisition. Reinvesting a portion of early earnings into packaging, better photography and proven fragrances can help turn a home operation into a sustainable small business.
