FIR Against Mamata Banerjee Over Alleged High Court Order Violation
KOLKATA | AUGUST 29, 2026
Kolkata Police have registered a suo motu FIR against former West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee over an alleged violation of directions issued by the Calcutta High Court during a Trinamool Chhatra Parishad gathering on August 28.
The event was held on Cathedral Road in central Kolkata after the High Court imposed specific conditions concerning traffic movement and crowd management. One of the directions required a portion of the road to remain open to ensure the uninterrupted movement of vehicles.
Police have alleged that the conditions were not fully followed during the gathering, with supporters occupying areas of the road and affecting traffic movement. The authorities have also alleged that barricades were moved and that the programme continued beyond the time permitted under the court’s directions.
The case has been registered at Hastings Police Station. Organisers and other individuals associated with the event have also been named in the proceedings, with police examining their respective roles.
The FIR reportedly includes provisions under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. The matter is now subject to investigation, and the allegations will have to be established through due legal process.
The development comes amid heightened political activity in West Bengal and has added a fresh legal dimension to the state’s political landscape.
At this stage, the allegations remain allegations, and registration of an FIR does not by itself establish guilt. Further investigation and judicial proceedings will determine the legal responsibility of those named in the case.
