Indian Markets Begin September Under Pressure

NG TV NEWS

Mumbai, September 2: Indian equity markets enter Wednesday’s trading session with investors balancing strong domestic economic growth against renewed global uncertainty. The benchmark indices ended Tuesday with a mild negative bias, extending their decline for a second consecutive session.

The Sensex closed at 76,944.28, down 12.99 points, while the Nifty 50 settled at 24,055.80, lower by 24.60 points. Broader markets remained under greater pressure, with mid-cap stocks witnessing sharper selling.

WHAT IS DRIVING THE MARKET?

Global developments remain a major influence. Rising crude oil prices, continuing tensions in West Asia and higher global bond yields have increased concerns about inflation and interest rates. Brent crude was trading around $92 a barrel, keeping pressure on economies such as India that depend significantly on imported energy.

The rupee, meanwhile, showed some resilience. It closed at around ₹94.95 against the US dollar on September 1, supported partly by dollar-selling intervention and foreign-bank flows. However, elevated oil prices and higher global yields remain potential challenges for the currency.

DOMESTIC ECONOMY OFFERS SUPPORT

A major positive factor is India’s latest growth data. The economy expanded 7.8% year-on-year during April-June 2026, exceeding earlier expectations. Strong domestic growth provides a counterweight to external pressures and could help support investor sentiment.

Foreign investor activity, however, remains a concern. Foreign institutional investors were net sellers of nearly ₹7,986 crore on August 31, while domestic institutions bought around ₹4,589 crore, providing some support to the market.

MARKET OUTLOOK

For September 2, volatility is likely to remain a key feature. Traders are expected to closely monitor crude prices, global bond yields, currency movements and geopolitical developments. The 24,000 level on the Nifty remains an important psychological zone.

The broader message from the market is one of caution: strong domestic fundamentals are providing support, but global risks continue to restrict a decisive upward move.
