Kolkata, September 2: Candle making is emerging as a practical small-business option for entrepreneurs looking to start from home with limited capital. From basic decorative candles to scented, festive and customised varieties, the business can begin on a small scale and gradually expand through local orders and online sales.

How Much Investment Is Needed?

A home-based beginner can start with approximately ₹10,000–₹25,000. The initial budget can cover wax, candle moulds, wicks, fragrance oils, suitable colourants, weighing equipment, containers, basic safety equipment and packaging materials. A slightly larger setup with more moulds and greater raw-material stock may require ₹30,000–₹50,000.

How to Prepare

The basic process involves measuring the wax, melting it carefully using appropriate equipment, preparing the wick and mould or container, and adding suitable fragrance and colour according to the product design. The melted wax is then poured carefully and allowed to cool and set completely. Different moulds can create candles in floral, geometric, festive and personalised designs.

Safety is essential. Wax should be heated using proper equipment and under adult supervision where required. Keep the workspace ventilated, organised and away from children, pets and open flames.

How to Pack

Packaging can significantly influence a customer’s buying decision. Simple candles can be packed in sturdy boxes or transparent protective packaging, while premium products can use printed boxes, labels, ribbons and thank-you cards. Every package should clearly mention the product name, quantity and basic candle-safety instructions.

How to Sell

The first market can be friends, neighbours, local gift shops, exhibitions and festive stalls. Social-media pages and messaging platforms can help display designs and collect orders. Customised candles for birthdays, weddings, return gifts and festivals can create additional demand. Good photographs and attractive packaging are particularly important for online sales.

What Can Be the Profit?

Profit depends on wax quality, design, fragrance, packaging, wastage and selling price. For illustration, if a candle costs ₹60–₹80 to produce and is sold for ₹120–₹180, the gross margin before other business expenses could be around ₹40–₹120 per candle. Selling 300 candles a month could therefore generate roughly ₹12,000–₹36,000 in gross contribution before expenses such as delivery, marketing and unsold stock.

The key to profitability is not simply making more candles, but creating distinctive designs, controlling production costs and building repeat customers.
