Traditional Modak Recipe

Ingredients

For the Outer Covering:

  • 1 cup rice flour
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 teaspoon ghee
  • A pinch of salt

For the Filling:

  • 1 cup grated coconut
  • ¾ cup jaggery
  • ½ teaspoon cardamom powder
  • Cashews and raisins, as desired

Method

  1. Heat a pan and add the grated coconut and jaggery. Cook on medium heat until the jaggery melts and the mixture becomes slightly dry.
  2. Add cardamom powder, cashews, and raisins. Mix well and set the filling aside to cool.
  3. In another pan, bring 1 cup of water to a boil. Add a pinch of salt and 1 teaspoon of ghee.
  4. Reduce the heat and gradually add the rice flour while stirring continuously to avoid lumps.
  5. Cover and cook for 3–4 minutes. Allow the mixture to cool slightly.
  6. Knead the mixture into a soft, smooth dough. Add a little warm water if necessary.
  7. Divide the dough into small portions and flatten each portion into a thin circle.
  8. Place a spoonful of the coconut-jaggery filling in the center.
  9. Carefully fold the edges upward and shape the dough into a traditional modak.
  10. Place the modaks in a steamer and steam for about 10–12 minutes.
  11. Once cooked, remove them carefully and serve warm with a little ghee.
