Markets Rebound, But Global Risks Keep Investors Cautious
Kolkata | September 5, 2026: Indian equity markets ended the week with a modest recovery, but the broader picture remains cautious. The Sensex gained 362.57 points, or 0.48%, to close at 76,515.43, while the Nifty 50 added 24.25 points, or 0.10%, to finish at 23,897.70 on Friday. The rebound broke a four-session losing streak.
Despite Friday’s recovery, both benchmarks recorded their fourth consecutive weekly decline. The Nifty fell around 1.2% for the week, while the Sensex lost about 1%, underlining the pressure that has been building in the market.
SECTOR WATCH
Market movement remained selective rather than broad-based. Metal stocks led gains, while insurance and several large financial names also attracted buying interest. At the other end, sectors including auto, pharma and realty faced pressure. Broader markets were mixed, with the small-cap segment showing resilience while mid-caps remained weaker.
CRUDE OIL AND GEOPOLITICAL RISKS
One of the biggest concerns for Indian investors continues to be elevated crude oil prices. Brent crude was hovering around $96 a barrel, with oil prices rising amid heightened tensions involving the US and Iran. Higher crude prices can increase India’s import bill and potentially add pressure to inflation and the rupee.
RUPEE & GOLD
The Indian rupee closed at approximately ₹94.49 per US dollar on Friday, while it gained around 0.9% over the week, according to market reports. Gold also remained firmly in focus, although prices slipped during Friday’s session ahead of key US employment data.
WHAT NEXT?
Global interest-rate expectations remain a major market driver. Investors are watching US employment and inflation data for clues about the Federal Reserve’s next move. Meanwhile, domestic economic growth and earnings remain important supports for Indian equities.
For the coming week, crude oil, the rupee, global bond yields, foreign investor flows and US economic data are likely to remain key market signals.
