MANGAL DEV: THE DIVINE POWER BEHIND TUESDAY’S SIGNIFICANCE

KOLKATA | SEPTEMBER 1, 2026

Tuesday holds a distinctive place in Hindu tradition, and its spiritual identity is closely associated with Mangal Dev, the deity linked with Mars, courage, strength and determination. Known in Sanskrit as Mangala, the planetary deity has traditionally been regarded as a symbol of energy, discipline and the ability to overcome obstacles.

According to Hindu mythology, different traditions describe Mangal Dev’s origin in different ways. One widely known account connects him with Bhumi Devi, the Earth Goddess, and Lord Shiva. Because of this association with the Earth, Mangal is also known as Bhauma, meaning one who is born from the Earth.

In traditional belief, Mangal represents the fiery qualities associated with Mars. Strength, confidence, physical energy, leadership and determination are among the qualities attributed to him. Tuesday, or Mangalvar, is therefore considered an important day for devotees who seek courage and the strength to face difficulties.

Mangal Dev also occupies an important position in Navagraha worship, where the nine planetary deities are traditionally honoured. In Hindu astrology, Mars is associated with assertiveness, ambition, competition and action. Its influence is often interpreted as representing the force that encourages an individual to take initiative rather than remain passive.

Traditional worship of Mangal Dev may include prayers, offerings and acts of devotion on Tuesdays. Devotees may also visit temples dedicated to Lord Hanuman, whose worship is particularly associated with Tuesday. In popular religious practice, Hanuman devotion is believed to help cultivate courage, discipline and resilience—qualities that closely complement the traditional symbolism of Mangal.

Beyond astrology and ritual, the story of Mangal Dev carries a broader cultural message. Strength is not simply about power; it is also about controlling anger, maintaining discipline and using energy responsibly. Courage becomes meaningful when it is guided by wisdom and purpose.

As Tuesday begins, Mangal Dev’s traditional symbolism offers a reminder to approach challenges with determination while maintaining self-control. His place in Hindu mythology reflects an enduring belief that inner strength, disciplined action and courage can help individuals navigate difficult circumstances.
