Seven Days in Ziro Valley:
A Budget Journey into Arunachal’s Apatani Heartland
SPECIAL TRAVEL FEATURE | ARUNACHAL PRADESH
Note: I’m treating “Zero Valley” as Ziro Valley. The budget below assumes the trip starts from Kolkata and is for two travellers, using trains, shared vehicles and budget homestays.
Ziro is not a destination to be rushed. At roughly 1,780 metres, the valley combines pine-covered hills, rice fields, traditional Apatani villages and a slower pace of life. It is also on UNESCO’s Tentative List for its Apatani cultural landscape.
For a genuinely budget-conscious week, train + shared road transport + homestay is the most sensible combination.
💰 Estimated budget for two
Expense
Approx. cost for 2
Kolkata–Naharlagun return train, Sleeper
₹3,000–₹3,200
Shared transport Naharlagun–Ziro–Naharlagun
₹1,600–₹2,500
4 nights budget homestay
₹7,000–₹10,000
Food for 7 days
₹4,000–₹5,500
Local sightseeing/vehicle
₹3,000–₹4,500
ILP
₹600–₹1,000
Miscellaneous
₹1,500–₹2,000
Estimated total
₹20,700–₹28,700
Current listings show budget homestays in Ziro around ₹1,800–₹3,000 per night, although rates vary by date and availability.
The official eILP system currently lists ₹300 for up to three days and ₹500 for stays beyond three days up to 14 days, so a seven-day visit falls into the ₹500-per-person category.
🗓️ DAY 1 — Kolkata → Naharlagun
Begin the journey by train rather than flying if the objective is to keep the trip affordable.
A current Kolkata–Naharlagun service takes roughly 25–26 hours, with Sleeper fares around ₹750 per person on the listed service.
Overnight: Train
Food: Carry packed food and buy meals at major stations.
Budget: ₹1,500–₹1,800 for two including train and meals.
🗓️ DAY 2 — Naharlagun → Ziro
Arrive at Naharlagun and continue towards Ziro by shared Tata Sumo/shared taxi. The Lower Subansiri district administration confirms that shared Sumos operate from Naharlagun towards Ziro.
The road journey is the point where the character of the trip changes—plains gradually give way to mountain roads and forested landscapes.
Check in: Budget homestay
Evening: Relax and explore Hapoli market locally.
Stay: Ziro
Budget for two: ₹2,000–₹3,000
🗓️ DAY 3 — The Apatani Villages
This should be your cultural day.
Explore villages such as Hong, Hari and Bulla, walking through traditional settlements and surrounding agricultural areas. Take time to understand the Apatani way of life rather than treating the villages simply as photography stops.
Morning: Village walk
Afternoon: Local lunch + rice-field exploration
Evening: Return to Hapoli
Budget: ₹1,500–₹2,000 for two including local transport and food.
NGTV Travel Note: Always ask before photographing residents, particularly elders and people engaged in traditional activities.
🗓️ DAY 4 — Kile Pakho & Pine Landscapes
Start early for Kile Pakho, one of the area’s scenic viewpoints. On a clear day, the valley opens up dramatically from the higher ground.
After lunch, spend time around Ziro’s pine forests and quieter roads.
This is deliberately kept as a lighter day. Ziro’s appeal is as much about slowing down as ticking attractions off a list.
Stay: Same homestay
Budget: ₹1,500–₹2,500 for two.
🗓️ DAY 5 — Talley Valley Day
For adventurous travellers, Talley Valley Wildlife Sanctuary is the major excursion. Arunachal Tourism places Talley Valley about 32 km northeast of Ziro and describes it as a biodiversity hotspot with trekking opportunities.
However, this is one day where don’t try to save money by going without a proper local guide or transport arrangement. Mountain weather can change quickly, and the terrain is remote.
If weather or road conditions aren’t suitable, make this a relaxed Ziro sightseeing day instead.
Budget: ₹2,000–₹3,500 for two depending on vehicle/guide arrangements.
🗓️ DAY 6 — Ziro → Naharlagun
Have breakfast and begin the return journey.
Shared vehicles are the economical choice. Keep some flexibility because Arunachal’s mountain roads can be affected by rain and landslides; Arunachal Tourism specifically advises travellers to keep extra time because of unpredictable weather and possible delays.
After reaching Naharlagun, board the return train towards Kolkata if the timetable matches your travel dates.
Budget: ₹1,600–₹2,000 for two including transport and food.
🗓️ DAY 7 — Train → Kolkata
Spend the final day travelling back to Kolkata.
The return Naharlagun–Kolkata service currently listed takes roughly 28 hours, with Sleeper fares around ₹760 per person.
🎒 WHAT TO PACK

⚠️ NGTV WEATHER & SAFETY DESK
If this trip is being planned for late August, budget travellers should be particularly cautious. August falls within the monsoon period, when road conditions and travel times can be unpredictable. September–November is generally considered a more favourable period for visiting Ziro.

For travellers under 18, this should be planned with a parent/guardian or another responsible adult, especially because some portions involve remote mountain roads and trekking.
NGTV VERDICT
For two people: keep ₹25,000–₹30,000 as a comfortable target.
The key to keeping Ziro affordable is simple: train instead of flights, shared vehicles instead of private cars, homestays instead of hotels, and local food instead of tourist-oriented dining.
Ziro isn’t a trip built around luxury. It is a journey into landscapes, villages and a culture that rewards travellers who arrive slowly—and stay curious.
