Teacher Arrested in Berhampore Over Alleged Sexual Abuse of Minor Students

BERHAMPORE | AUGUST 28, 2026

NEWS DESK: A disturbing case has shaken Berhampore after a government-school para-teacher was arrested following allegations of sexual abuse involving minor students during private tuition classes.

The accused has been identified as Piyush Rudra, a para-teacher reportedly teaching physical science at a government school. Police arrested him on Thursday morning after receiving written complaints from the families of several students.

According to police sources, Rudra was taken into custody from his residence in the Mollageria Dhar area and was subsequently arrested after the allegations were examined. A case has been registered under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. He is expected to be produced before the Murshidabad district POCSO court.

The allegations reportedly centre on private tuition classes conducted at the teacher’s residence. Parents have alleged that some students were allegedly left alone with the teacher after other students were sent outside.

One Class IX student’s mother claimed that she had enrolled her son for physical science tuition around a month and a half ago. She said she later noticed changes in his behaviour and, after speaking with him, became aware of the allegations. The family subsequently contacted other parents, according to her account.

Another parent, whose son had reportedly studied under Rudra since Class VIII, has also alleged inappropriate conduct. She further claimed that her son was allegedly threatened when he considered telling his family.

The allegations have caused concern among parents and residents in the area. Several parents reportedly gathered outside the accused teacher’s residence on Thursday, demanding his arrest. Police subsequently arrived and took Rudra to the police station.

Meanwhile, some local residents have claimed that similar allegations had surfaced against the teacher in the past. However, those earlier claims were reportedly not supported by a formal written complaint, and police have not publicly confirmed whether they are connected to the present investigation.

Police have said that the allegations are being investigated and that statements and other evidence may be collected as part of the process.

The case has also raised wider concerns about the safety of minors in private tuition settings and the responsibility of adults and institutions to ensure a secure learning environment.

The allegations have not been proven in court. The investigation and judicial process will determine the facts of the case.
