Norway Mourns King Harald V, Who Dies at 89 After 35-Year Reign

OSLO | AUGUST 28, 2026

Norway is mourning the death of King Harald V, who passed away peacefully at Oslo University Hospital on Friday morning at the age of 89. The Norwegian Royal Palace confirmed that the King died at 6:35 a.m. local time.

King Harald had been receiving hospital treatment since August 17 after developing a bacterial infection in his bloodstream. His condition had deteriorated in recent days, prompting growing concern across Norway.

Harald became King of Norway on January 17, 1991, following the death of his father, King Olav V. Over more than three decades on the throne, he became a highly respected and familiar figure in Norwegian public life. His role was largely ceremonial, but he was widely regarded as an important symbol of national unity.

His reign was marked by a modern approach to the monarchy and a close connection with the Norwegian people. He was particularly visible during periods of national tragedy, including the 2011 terrorist attacks, when he became a prominent voice of solidarity and reassurance.

King Harald was also known for his humility, sporting interests and willingness to embrace a less traditional image of monarchy. He was Europe’s oldest reigning monarch at the time of his death.

His passing now brings an end to a 35-year reign and begins a new chapter for the Norwegian monarchy. His son, Crown Prince Haakon, has succeeded him as King of Norway, marking a historic transition at the head of the Scandinavian nation.
