September Bank Holidays: RBI Holiday List
How Many Days Will Banks Remain Closed in September?
Bank branches across India will observe several holidays in September due to festivals and regional occasions. In addition to festival-related holidays, banks will remain closed on all Sundays and the second and fourth Saturdays, as per the regular banking holiday schedule.
However, it is important to note that RBI bank holidays are largely city- and state-specific. Therefore, a holiday observed in one part of the country may not apply to bank branches in another state or city.
September 4 — Janmashtami
On September 4, banks will remain closed in several cities on account of Janmashtami and Krishna Jayanti.
The cities listed for the holiday include Ahmedabad, Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Chandigarh, Chennai, Dehradun, Gangtok, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Jammu, Kanpur, Kochi, Kolkata, Lucknow, Patna, Raipur, Ranchi, Shillong, Shimla, Srinagar, Thiruvananthapuram and Vijayawada, among others.
However, this holiday will not apply uniformly across the country.
Regular Weekly Bank Holidays
Apart from festival holidays, bank branches will remain closed on:
- September 6 — Sunday
- September 12 — Second Saturday
- September 13 — Sunday
- September 20 — Sunday
- September 26 — Fourth Saturday
- September 27 — Sunday
Additional holidays may apply in specific states and cities depending on local festivals and occasions.
Will Digital Banking Services Remain Available?
A bank branch being closed does not necessarily mean that all banking services will stop. UPI, ATMs, mobile banking and internet banking services generally remain operational even on bank holidays.
However, services that require a physical visit to a bank branch—such as certain documentation, KYC-related work or branch-specific transactions—may not be available on holidays.
Bottom Line
Customers planning to visit their bank in September should check the RBI holiday calendar for their specific city or state before visiting a branch. The exact number of holidays can vary depending on the location.
