Trump Says Strait of Hormuz Mines Have Been Cleared
WASHINGTON, August 25, 2026: US President Donald Trump has said that all mines in the international waters of the Strait of Hormuz have been removed or detonated, claiming the US Navy has completed the clearance operation.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump warned Iran against placing any new mines in the strategic waterway, saying the United States would adopt a “zero tolerance” approach. He also said US Space Force assets were monitoring the strait closely.
The announcement comes as the Strait of Hormuz remains under intense international scrutiny amid continuing tensions involving the United States and Iran. The waterway is one of the world’s most important energy routes, making any disruption a major concern for global oil supplies and shipping.
However, maritime security authorities have urged caution. A Joint Maritime Information Center advisory issued on August 25 said the risk from drifting or uncharted mines remained and that mine-surveying and clearance operations were continuing. The centre continued to classify the maritime threat as severe.
Trump’s statement could ease concerns among shipping and energy markets if the clearance is confirmed. But the contrasting assessments underline the security challenges that remain in and around the Strait.
For global markets, the key question now is whether commercial shipping can return to more normal operations without facing renewed threats. The developments will also be closely watched for their wider impact on oil prices, regional stability and US-Iran relations.
