L&T’s New Town Expansion Signals Kolkata’s Growing Tech Ambition
KOLKATA: New Town is steadily strengthening its position as a technology and infrastructure hub in eastern India, with Larsen & Toubro (L&T) advancing plans for a major technology campus in the Bengal Silicon Valley area.
The project, being developed through L&T’s technology arm LTIMindtree, involves an estimated investment of around ₹2,500 crore across multiple phases. The first phase is nearing completion, while additional phases are planned as part of the company’s wider expansion in West Bengal. The campus is expected to generate significant employment opportunities, with estimates indicating potential support for nearly 25,000 jobs.
The development comes as New Town attracts increasing interest from technology and digital infrastructure companies. The Bengal Silicon Valley initiative is aimed at creating a stronger ecosystem for IT, technology services and innovation, potentially giving Kolkata a larger role in India’s expanding digital economy.
L&T’s investment plans extend beyond the New Town campus. The company has indicated a proposed investment of more than ₹4,500 crore in West Bengal, including a proposed Tier-III data centre in Kolkata, estimated to require around ₹2,000 crore.
For Kolkata, the project represents more than a corporate expansion. It could generate direct and indirect employment, strengthen supporting businesses and contribute to the development of New Town as a technology-led economic corridor.
The pace at which the planned phases are completed will be crucial in determining the project’s long-term economic impact and its contribution to Kolkata’s emergence as a major technology destination.
