The International Cricket Council (ICC) has penalised India opener Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sri Lanka pacer Asitha Fernando following their heated confrontation during the second Test in Colombo. Both players were fined 25 per cent of their match fees and received one demerit point each for breaching Article 2.12 of the ICC Code of Conduct, concerning inappropriate physical contact during an international match.
The incident occurred after Fernando dismissed Jaiswal during the 17th over of India’s first innings. An exchange of words escalated when the two players moved towards each other, resulting in brief head-to-head contact. Both admitted the offence and accepted the sanctions proposed by ICC Match Referee Andy Pycroft, avoiding a formal hearing.
The ICC noted that neither player had committed an offence during the previous 24 months. The decision sends a clear message that competitive intensity must remain within the boundaries of sporting conduct.
