KOLKATA | AUGUST 24, 2026: West Bengal’s political landscape is witnessing renewed friction as questions surrounding the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), refugee citizenship, alleged illegal infiltration and political accountability gain fresh prominence.
The Centre’s decision to empower eight District Magistrates in West Bengal to expedite the processing of CAA citizenship certificates has provided the BJP with a significant political plank in the state. The move assumes particular importance amid the continuing debate over citizenship rights and the status of eligible refugees.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah, during his recent political engagements in Bengal, intensified the BJP’s attack on the previous Trinamool Congress administration, particularly over its opposition to the CAA and allegations concerning illegal immigration.
The issue is expected to remain politically charged, with the BJP likely to emphasise citizenship, border security and alleged infiltration, while the Opposition is expected to scrutinise the Centre’s implementation strategy and its implications for Bengal.
ASHIS BANERJEE DEATH TRIGGERS POLITICAL QUESTIONS
Meanwhile, the death of former West Bengal Assembly Deputy Speaker and veteran TMC leader Ashis Banerjee continues to cast a shadow over the state’s political discourse.
Banerjee, a former Rampurhat MLA, was found dead at a Trinamool Congress office on August 16. Reports surrounding a purported suicide note, including references to allegations of corruption and his political life, have intensified questions surrounding the circumstances preceding his death.
The matter remains under investigation, while the political ramifications could widen if questions concerning pressure, allegations and accountability gain further traction.
LOP STATUS ANOTHER POTENTIAL FLASHPOINT
The position of Leader of the Opposition Ritabrata Banerjee could also emerge as a politically sensitive subject. The Calcutta High Court’s recent observations concerning the provisional nature of his appointment have added another layer to the evolving political equation.
With the new Assembly witnessing a markedly altered political balance, procedural and constitutional questions surrounding the Opposition’s role could become increasingly contentious.
ASSEMBLY WATCH
While there is no confirmed indication of a full sitting of the West Bengal Legislative Assembly on August 24, political observers are closely watching whether these issues translate into formal legislative interventions, statements or political confrontations in the days ahead.
For Bengal, the immediate political battleground appears increasingly defined by three competing narratives — citizenship and infiltration, political accountability, and the institutional strength of the Opposition.
